Employees using corporate or personal devices to text and use communication apps use can pose risk to an organization. The risk can be even greater for highly regulated industries like financial institutions. Recently, Deutsche Bank announced a ban on employee text messaging with company-issued phones. The ban also extends to the use of communication apps like WhatsApp.

Even more than email, text messages and communication app messages pose record-keeping challenges. The bank issued a memo stating that “[w]e fully understand that the deactivation will change your day-to-day work and we regret any inconvenience this may cause . . . however, this step is necessary to ensure Deutsche Bank continues to comply with regulatory and legal requirements.”

Assessing your organization’s device and app related risks is an important part of an overall compliance and risk management program. Click here for an article with more information on the Deutsche Bank texting ban. Contact us at Ossian Law regarding any information technology law matter.
